Hi, I’m Katie.
I earned my M.D. from Columbia University, and completed my surgical and critical care training at Massachusetts General Hospital where I then joined the staff. In an unexpected turn of events that was never part of my “plan,” the Lord drew me away from academic surgery to homeschool my kids, one of whom is twice exceptional. I’ve now exchanged the scalpel for caterpillar terrariums, peanut butter and jelly, and plenty of moments when the Lord lays bare my insufficiencies. In the crevices of days, I write about the intertwining of faith and medicine, and journey with friends in Bible study.
The multiple instances of heartache I witnessed among families in the ICU inspired my book Between Life and Death: A Gospel-Centered Guide to End-of-Life Medical Care, released from Crossway in 2019. My prayer is that the book will start vital conversations between loved ones about medical situations we’d rather not think about, but which bear consequences too shattering to ignore. I’m eager to talk about the topic of the book, and have been grateful for engaging conversations on Moody Radio, Pilgrim Radio, the Chris Fabry Show, the Think Biblically podcast, and other ministries.
On this blog, you’ll find thoughts on faith, medicine, motherhood, books, and moments in life that demand remembering. You can also find links to my writing at Desiring God, The Gospel Coalition, and other ministries here. Most of all, I’d love to connect with you. I hope some of the content here moves you, just as the fellowship with readers has so touched me.
Thank you for visiting. May God bless you and yours.
