Great article. Interesting how deaths quadrupled at the same rate as prescribing. You hear a lot from politicians about holding drug companies accountable. What about the Joint Commission?
Ultimately this is a problem rooted in the heart and we must teach people how to replace their selfish desires with a new affection for Him!

Hi John, thank you so much for your feedback. Even more than selfish desires, I think it’s an indicator of our brokenness, our separation from Him. The pain is real. Our hope is only in the Gospel.

Katie, thank you for such a beautiful article. I was addicted to pain killers and many other things from many years. I tried all the secular methods to quit, but not surprisingly they all failed. Only after surrendering my all to Jesus Christ did I stop.
Only after I had a living encounter with the almighty creator and understanding that I was made to worship Him were my addictions taken from me by Christ. People don’t have an addiction problem, they have a worship problem. Again thank you for shedding light on this evil that robs people of their lives.

Thank you so very much for your well thought out and written words. You inspire me with every article you write and I continue to be so encouraged by your forthright passion. I feel much kinship with you as a mother that moved from a professional/academic world to being a stay at home mom. I could blather on for an enternity about that but it is probably best to just say, thank you beyond words for your wisdom and encouragement.
As a side note (and a relevant one here) our church works with a group that helps people transition from drug use to church/society. If it is okay, I would like to list their link here in case anyone who happens upon your article could be blessed by it. They’ve done a tremendous job of helping individuals that want to walk with Jesus and be free of drug use to practically transition back into real life and be plugged into a church.
